The Foothills Parkway stretches over 70 miles through the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Foothills Parkway is a winding mountain road that offers panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains National Park. As you drive along the parkway, you’ll encounter sweeping vistas and secluded overlooks.
History:
In 1944, the United States Congress envisioned a scenic parkway winding through the Great Smoky Mountains. The Foothills Parkway was going to connect US 129 with I-40. The progress on Foothills Parkway has been going on for decades. In the early stages, engineers faced challenges creating the bridge on unstable bedrock, steep slopes, and transporting construction equipment to the site. In 2018 the bridge was finally complete nearly 80 years later.
Scenic Overlooks:
You’ll find parking spots at every overlook, where you can step out of your car and enjoy a magnificent view! These spots are perfect for taking a break and stretching your legs after a long drive, or capturing memorable pictures.
Wildlife sightings are common, with deer grazing in meadows. Keep an eye out for black bears, white-tailed deer, squirrels, raccoons, and an abundance of bird species.
Open year round:
One of the best things about cruising along this parkway is that you can do it any time of the year! Witness trees and plants blooming in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, and colorful leaves falling in autumn. And during winter you might even catch a glimpse of snow-capped mountains!
