Foothills Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in East Tennessee, offering sweeping views of the Great Smoky Mountains without having to travel deep into the national park. Located about an hour from Knoxville, it’s an easy day trip for residents who enjoy mountain scenery and spending time outdoors.
The parkway follows the foothills of the Smokies, with overlooks where visitors can stop to take photos and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Driving the Foothills Parkway
Foothills Parkway was first authorized in 1944 as a scenic route along the northern edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The original plan called for more than 70 miles of roadway, although portions remain unfinished.
One of the most popular sections runs between Wears Valley and Walland. This stretch includes the famous Missing Link, a challenging section of roadway completed in 2018. Its elevated bridges and mountain overlooks have become some of the parkway’s most recognizable features.
Unlike some of the busier roads through the Smokies, Foothills Parkway is primarily a scenic driving route. There are plenty of places to pull over, enjoy the views, and take your time along the way.
Scenic Overlooks and Mountain Views
The overlooks are one of the biggest reasons to visit Foothills Parkway. Depending on where you stop, you can see mountain ridges stretching into the distance, wooded valleys, and the surrounding countryside.
The scenery changes with the weather and time of day. On clear days, the views extend for miles, while low clouds and morning fog create a completely different mountain landscape.
Wildlife, including deer, wild turkeys, and occasionally black bears, may also be seen in the surrounding area. Visitors should observe animals from a safe distance.
Visiting Foothills Parkway Throughout the Year
Foothills Parkway is worth visiting in every season.
Spring: Blooming trees and wildflowers bring color to the mountainsides.
Summer: The surrounding forests turn deep green, and clear days provide beautiful views across the Smokies.
Fall: The parkway is especially popular for its fall foliage, with changing leaves covering the hillsides in shades of red, orange, and yellow.
Winter: Bare trees open up additional mountain views, although snow and ice can cause temporary road closures.
Before visiting, check the National Park Service for current road conditions and closures.
